Golf Trolley Battery

Most golfers only need an 18-hole battery. If you play 36 holes in a day you’ll need either the larger 36-hole battery, or alternatively two 18-hole batteries. A well-maintained 18-hole battery, which has been charged properly, will ‘survive’ even the hilliest of courses and remain charged to the 18th hole. If you do opt to purchase two batteries, it is advisable to alternate them to get the best use out of both.

Battery Care and Maintenance

No matter what size golf trolley battery you opt to buy, it is important that it is cared for and charged properly after each use to ensure maximum longevity.

How long should an AGM or Gel battery last?
A trolley battery should give you in excess of 350 recharge cycles. However, this can be impacted by how you care-for and maintain your battery. Here are a few tips:
• When you purchase a battery it will arrive fully charged, but it is advisable that you give it a top up charge for a few hours before using it on your golf trolley,
• Only use the correct charger supplied by your golf trolley manufacturer or one specifically designed for deep cycle GEL or AGM batteries. It must say that it is a two or three stage (step) charger or have a red/orange and green light.
• Don’t leave your battery in a discharged state. Always put it on charge immediately after your round of golf and leave it on the maintenance charge until your next round of golf. Do not leave it on the maintenance charge for very long periods.
• Don’t store your battery in ‘extreme’ conditions, either very cold or very hot. When you do store your battery for a prolonged period, give it a refreshing charge every month; it will pay you back for your care.
• Every four or five rounds check that your golf trolley is in good working order with no sticky wheels or bearings etc. Extra drag will make your battery think it is going uphill for eighteen holes!

Most trolleys are supplied with an AGM battery (Absorbed Glass Mat). They were originally designed as a general-purpose battery, but the ones used for golf have thicker plates and are capable of deep cycle use. The latest AGM battery models will allow in excess of 300 cycles and 70% discharge.
